Luis Mendao graduated in Biochemistry in 1983 from Pierre et Marie Curie University. Diagnosed with HIV and hepatitis C in 1996, he became a prominent health activist. He is Director-General of GAT – Treatment Activists Group and serves on the boards of Coalition PLUS and the World Hepatitis Alliance. He represented Portugal in the EU Civil Society Forum and chaired the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG). In 2015, he was awarded Commander of the Order of Santiago, and in 2023 received the Gold Medal of Merit in Health. He was also a community advisor to WHO Europe, EUDA, ECDC, and EMA.
