RP Shanmugam’s biography 

I’m the first qualified Surgical Gastroenterologist of the country; with a special interest in Liver disease founded the famous Dept of Gastroenterology, Stanley Medical College, Chennai. I had also performed the country’s first liver transplant way back in 1996. With over 50 years in medical practice and my passion for serving the needy. We now have our own hospital, so that linkage to care will never be a problem. We are also collaborating with the Government to push for elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030. 

RP Shanmugam’s personal statement

I was diagnosed with Chronic Hepatitis B in late 1990’s and this caused cirrhosis which for which I underwent a Liver transplant in 2013. 

Since then, I have worked with extra energy to give it back to the society. We have screened over 35,000 in the community, and over 500 are under treatment with us. We have published this data in September 2018, European Journal of Gastroenterology and hepatology, the largest published data in India.

I have discharged my duties as an Executive Board member of the SEARO region and fulfilled my commitments to the best of my abilities. We conduct regular screening & vaccination camps. We are in the process of setting up a structured training programme for paramedical staff. 

We are also be collaborating with the Government of Tamil Nadu and working together towards the elimination of Viral Hepatitis by 2030. 

Setting up a state registry has been a priority and we are working with the appropriate governmental authorities to set up a model registry for the state which we hope to get adopted nationwide. 

I possess excellent interpersonal skills, I have ability to listen analyze, think strategically and creatively, and work well with people individually and in a group.

I have represented in capacity as a Member / Office bearer various professional association to increase academic awareness among doctor community like Indian medical association, association of surgeon of India, Indian society of Gastroenterology.

Being a medical professional my aim has been to provide quality and personalized service. As a high achiever and a patient myself I do have the passion and genuine interest in serving people.

I will be aware of potential for conflicts of interest and declare all potential and actual conflicts of interest to the Board. Be prepared to abstain from any critical decisions when significant conflicts of interest exist or could be seen to exist.
