gavi hepatitis b birth dose programme

In June 2024, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance launched its hepatitis B birth dose programme. Now, 38 countries will be able to apply for funding to introduce the hepatitis B birth dose vaccine into their immunisation programmes.
It is critical that civil society organisations and other stakeholders advocate to their ministries of health and encourage them to apply for Gavi support as soon as possible.
The support will have a significant impact on hepatitis B incidence. In 2022, 63% of the new hepatitis B infections were in the WHO AFRO region, with only 18% of babies receiving the birth dose vaccine. 32 of the Gavi-eligible countries are in this region and the funding will allow governments to vaccinate thousands of babies, and so help prevent mother to child transmission of hepatitis B.
The World Hepatitis Alliance and the Hepatitis B Foundation have a developed a community briefing to support local advocacy efforts.
