Hepatitis B functional cure

New innovations are bringing us closer than ever to a functional cure for hepatitis B, which could be transformative for people living with hepatitis B.
What is a functional cure?
A functional cure is achieved when the hepatitis B virus remains in the liver, but it is inactive and suppressed, so there is no reactivation, disease progression, or chance of onward transmission. It is a finite treatment that gets someone living with hepatitis B to the same state as someone who has naturally cleared the virus.
Given the new advancements in research, WHA developed a fact sheet for community advocates that outlines key terms related to a hepatitis B functional cure and the types of compounds that are in development.
Webinar: Hepatitis B functional cure: what does it mean and how close are we to reaching it?
On Tuesday 16 December 2025, WHA organised a webinar to provide an overview of what a functional cure is and the science driving its development.
Chaired by Rachel Halford, President of WHA, the webinar explored the types of treatment that are currently in the clinical pipeline, as presented by Dr Thomas Tu, WHA WPRO Board Member; Associate Professor, The Westmead Institute for Medical Research; Cofounder, Director, and Chair of Hep B Voices Australia; and Founder and Executive Director of HepBcommunity.org.
The event also discussed what achieving a functional cure could mean for people living with hepatitis B.
