WHA presents Knowledge for Change webinar series to enhance hepatitis knowledge

8 Jun 2016 Bridie Taylor

Advocacy is a powerful tool but in order to effectively advocate and bring about change, it is important to first build our knowledge in key areas within viral hepatitis. Following the success Tools for Change, a webinar series aimed at up skilling viewers on different aspects of advocacy and the tools needed to effectively lobby for change, we are introducing Knowledge for Change.

Knowledge for Change is a webinar series aimed at educating patient and patient representatives about relevant topics in the area of viral hepatitis and will feature presentations from experts in their field.

The first two webinars under this platform are on access to diagnostics and medicines. This is a highly important topic, currently 95% of those living with viral hepatitis are unaware of their status and of those that are aware less than 1% access treatment. On 28 May, 194 Member states made a historic commitment at the 69th World Health Assembly to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030. This includes a set of targets, of which two are; 90% of people with viral hepatitis will be aware they have it and 80% of people living with viral hepatitis will be treated.

This will require a considerable upscale in access to diagnostics and medicines and so understanding the landscape and challenges in this area is essential.

The webinars will explore issues such as pre-qualification by WHO, reducing prices, regulations and patents.
