On 28 July 2012, the World Hepatitis Alliance has coordinated the fifth global World Hepatitis Day and the second working in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO). The core global objectives of the World Hepatitis Day 2012 campaign were to:
• Raise awareness and understanding of hepatitis among the general public;
• Secure continual support for World Hepatitis Day;
• Generate a sense of urgency amongst all stakeholders to prioritise actionto continue to raise awareness of chronic hepatitis B and C around the globe and to drive policy change for improvements in health outcomes for patients.
For the second year running, World Hepatitis Day will take place on 28 July in recognition of the birthday of Professor Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the hepatitis B virus.
Working with WHO
In May 2010, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution on viral hepatitis which, together with vital commitments on prevention, treatment and patient care, made World Hepatitis Day an official WHO awareness day, one of only four disease related official days. WHO is now working with the Alliance as a collaborating partner on WHD.
During the Executive Board (EB) Meeting of WHO on January 2012, the Standing Committee on Nongovernmental Organization has concluded that the World Hepatitis Alliance met the criteria for admission into official relations and recommended the Alliance to be admitted into official relations with WHO. The official relations status recognises the cooperation that has been ongoing between the Alliance and WHO, giving credibility to the organisation and to the hepatitis community as a whole.
Campaign Theme - This is hepatitis... It's closer than you think.
In 2010 ‘This is hepatitis…’ was launched as a communication theme to tell the global human story of viral hepatitis, focusing on the real-life impact of these diseases to generate increased understanding among the general public. In 2011 the Alliance continued to build on the ‘This is hepatitis…’ theme, using it as a platform to communicate messages around and beyond World Hepatitis Day 2011. In partnership with WHO, additional campaign messaging was developed, which appeared on all campaign materials, such as awareness-raising posters, postcards and press materials. The wording was: Know it. Confront it. Hepatitis affects everyone, everywhere.
In 2012, the previous messages and themes have been retained, but a new overall core message was developed:
‘It’s closer than you think.’ This tag line is versatile and can be used and interpreted in a number of ways to highlight different campaign messages.
The role of the Alliance is to provide a framework for the World Hepatitis Day campaign, offering guidance, advice and core materials. Stakeholders are encouraged to develop messaging and local activities that work in their country/region. The World Hepatitis Alliance developed several campaign materials to support local organisations in their communications around the 2012 theme. These materials (logos, posters, web banners and toolkits) can be found on this website.
The Alliance also produced a campaign video and a facebook app to promote WHD and raise awareness.
Campaign Activity - Guinness World Record.
The World Hepatitis Alliance organised a global record attempt which took place on World Hepatitis Day involving 12,588 people and it resulted in a new Guinness World Record.
On 28th July, people gathered at 42 sites in 20 countries and 2 territories to mime the actions of the “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil” proverb, also known as the three wise monkeys. The proverb is widely recognised across the world to refer to those who deal with problems by refusing to acknowledge them, a theme which record breakers hoped would highlight that around the world hepatitis is being ignored.
The record took place in Canada, Ukraine, Turkey, India, Australia, USA, Serbia, Japan, Romania, Pakistan, New Zealand, Nigeria, Netherlands, China, Germany, Argentina, England, Mexico, Latvia, Malaysia, Scotland and Hong Kong.
