Pan African Workshop
17th - 19th January 2014, Côte d’Ivoire
Building capacity and strengthening patient voices are some of the Alliance’s strongest commitments. To this end we joined with a committee of African patients to organise our first ever Pan-African workshop, titled ‘Unleashing the patient voice in Africa’, specifically for our African member groups.
The overall objectives of the workshop were to create a unified voice across Africa, be a venue for promoting the role of patient groups as forces of change in the region, build their capacity in critical areas such as governance, fundraising and advocacy and be a forum for experience, best practice and information sharing based on the assumption that testimonies and exchanges between patients, medical community, public health officials and other stakeholders committed to the viral hepatitis cause create opportunities and empowerment.
The workshop was the first step toward the realisation of a larger community-led project to create a Pan African patient organisation and all patients were encouraged to input into all aspects of the project and take ownership based on the assumption that the success of such enterprise will be based on the community committing to principles of shared responsibility and solidarity.
